Dow Jones nears 'magical' 20,000 milestone

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose another 0.46% to close at 19,975 points, marking its 17th record high and stopping just 25 points short of the 'magical' 20,000 milestone eagerly awaited by the market.

Year-to-date the Dow is up 14.6%, with nearly 9% of performance coming after the US Presidential Election. US stocks gained a boost from the shock victory of Donald Trump (pictured) in the elections in November, and later from the Federal Reserve's move to raise interest rates for the second time in over a decade. The S&P 500 is up 6% over the period since Trump's win, hitting 2,271 in yesterday's trading, while the Nasdaq has also risen nearly 6% to 5,484 points.
