Now a well-chronicled global incident, on 9 March 2009 the S&P 500 index suffered the worst decline in value since the Great Depression.

Since then, the market rebounded and is now the longest running bull market on record. For several years, analysts left, right and centre have claimed US recession is right around the corner, so why has it not arrived? Is a global recession inevitable?
