So far this year, markets have had to contend with the political turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East and the aftermath of the earthquake in Japan. Big news can shape short-term market sentiment, but it need not drive the direction of individual share prices. Europe has made it on to the front pages with concerns Portugal will follow Greece and Ireland as the next domino to topple in the sovereign debt crisis.
