Investors seeking refuge from a deteriorating eurozone debt crisis have found safe havens increasingly hard to find over the past few weeks. Despite record highs in the aftermath of August’s sell-offs, the price of gold has fallen off more recently as liquidity concerns spook investors. Meanwhile, an exodus from the dollar at the beginning of September put a strain on its fellow traditional currency safe havens: the Japanese yen and Swiss franc were effectively struck off the list by official interventions to put caps on their appreciation.
