One of the features of the past four years has been the strong seasonal pattern to stock market returns. The first quarter has typically produced positive returns, followed by a weaker second quarter. This year has begun in exactly the same fashion, with equity markets demonstrating resilience in the face of the Cyprus crisis, the lower than hoped-for rate of Chinese economic recovery and sequestration in the US.
