On 5 March 2013 the most totemic stock market index of all, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, hit a record high by closing at 14,253 – surpassing the previous record in October 2007 of 14,164. From its lowest point following the 2008/09 financial crisis, the index had returned 143% including dividends over four years. Since then the index has continued to climb.
