Before you think of asking yourself which way emerging markets are going to go this year, stop, writes Tamsin Evans, head of multi-asset at River and Mercantile Asset Management.
It is just not the right question to ask anymore. From an investment perspective, the various emerging market economies are far too diverse to be lumped together. Regardless of whether the dollar continues to strengthen, irrespective of a possible rise in protectionism, and no matter what happens to the oil price, the equity and bond markets of some emerging market countries are almost certainly going to perform a great deal better than others.
