If you are looking for the long-term winners of the digital economy, it is hard to ignore the payment networks.

Both Mastercard and Visa enjoy much higher market shares in the digital world than in the physical one.  For example, Visa recently explained that 12 cents out of $1 of payments in the bricks and mortar space is routed through its network. In the digital space, Visa's market share is 43 cents.
