Extreme price moves spell tough times for bond investors

AXA WF Global Strategic Bonds manager Nick Hayes tells Dan Jones why he may be about to change his portfolio positioning after a ‘strange year' for fixed income investors.

Nick Hayes, manager of the $291m AXA WF Global Strategic Bonds and £333m AXA Sterling Strategic Bonds fund, admits 2014 has been "a very strange year" for bond investors. He acknowledges his portfolio positioning showed little signs of conviction throughout the summer, but suggests that may be about to change. Hayes has run the global portfolio since its launch in 2012. His sterling fund has returned 25.4% since Hayes became manager in late August 2010, according to FE, compared with a 24.5% average return for the IMA Sterling Strategic Bond sector.
