Morning Markets: Muted gain for FTSE on last day of quarter

The UK's largest stocks struggled to make headway in the last session of the quarter despite a positive performance for financials and insurers.

The FTSE 100 added 10 points, or 0.2%, to 5,169.6, with Man Group dominating the gainers. The listed hedge fund firm leaped 6.2% after it reported a jump in funds under management as a result of slowing redemption rates and positive investment performance. Insurers were also in favour as Legal & General and Aviva continued to benefit from takeover talk. Both names have kept cropping up as potential targets for Clive Cowdery, whose takeover vehicle Resolution swooped on Friends Provident in the summer.
