Morning markets: FTSE up as miners regain lost ground

The FTSE climbed 0.9%, or 49 points this morning, boosted by British Airways and mining stocks.

By 0945 GMT it sat at 5762 points, buoyed in part by a late rally on Wall Street overnight British Airways' rise yesterday, on news of agreement for a merger with Iberia, continued this morning with a 6.4p gain to 251.4p. Miners regained some of the ground they lost amid falling commodity prices yesterday. Silver and gold producer Fresnillo rose 2.7% to 877p after upbeat statements out of Mexico, one its main operating bases. Cairn Energy gained 2.1% to 432.5p and Eurasian Natural Resources also rose by 2.1% to £12.35. Financial firms peppered the fallers. RSA Insurance Gr...
