The FTSE moved slightly higher in early trading, up 0.45% or 25.45 points to 5,628 amid oil exploration success and M&A activity in the energy sector.
Cairn Energy rose 3% to 439.7p on the revelation of a potential new oil source off Greenland where a well is being drilled by the Edinburgh-based group. RBS is also up 1.1% at 49.56p on the news it has offloaded joint venture Sempra Energy Solutions to Noble Gas and Power for £204m. The sale is part of the bank's deal with the European Commission to sell off non-core assets following its bailout by the British taxpayer.
