Soaring Apple shares boost global markets

Apple shares leapt as trading began on Wall Street today after it reported yesterday that profits had almost doubled in a single quarter.

Apple stock rose 9% to $610 per share as markets digested the tech giant's bumper results for the fiscal second quarter. The stronger-than-expected report boosted US markets on open this afternoon. The Dow Jones rose 0.76% to 13,100, while the S&P 500 gained 1.24% to 1,389. The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 2.28% to trade at 3,028. US investors are also awaiting a Federal Reserve policy announcement expected this afternoon, in which chairman Ben Bernanke will give his latest assessment of the economy.
