Ex-Italian PM Berlusconi sentenced to four years for tax fraud

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to four years in jail for his part in a six-year old tax fraud case.

A Milan court returned the verdict this afternoon and banned Berlusconi from politics for five years in the process. He is able to appeal the verdict on two separate occasions before the jail sentence is final. Prosecutors alleged Berlusconi and ten others evaded taxes relating to deals made by his television networks. The trial began in 2006 but was put on hold by an immunity law that shielded Berlusconi from prosecution while he was Prime Minister.
