Markets muted as Spanish bailout rumours resurface

European markets were flat in mid-morning trading today as investors paused for breath amid fresh rumours Spain is about to request an official bailout.

Macro concerns had already weighed on European stocks during yesterday's session, as fears resurfaced over Greece's ability to meet its debt obligations, while workers in Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal organised a wave of protests against austerity measures. After heavy selling yesterday, the Dax and the Cac 40 were both up marginally around 0.1%. Meanwhile the FTSE 100 remained in the doldrums today, down 0.34% to 5,767 in mid-morning trading following a poor session yesterday which saw the leading index hit a two-month low after a big fall in Vodafone's share price.
