Data provider FE has named several rising stars of fund management in its 2014 Alpha Managers list, as well as recognising the industry's veterans.
First-time FE Alpha Managers include experienced names such as Ingenious Asset Management chief executive Guy Bowles and GAMCO Investors chair Mario Gabelli.
But several younger managers also made the grade, including Invesco's Stephen Anness, Franklin Templeton's Michael Clements, and Somerset Capital's Edward Lam.
Meanwhile, others claiming the title for a fifth consecutive year include First State Investments' Angus Tulloch and Marin Lau, as well as Schroders' Andy Brough and Jenny Jones. The latter manager is also one of ten women named FE Alpha Managers this year.
Ten managers who had previously made the list but missed out in 2013 have returned to Alpha status.
More than a fifth of the 165 fund managers awarded FE's Alpha Manager Rating for 2104 have been named for the first time.
A further fifth of the awards went to managers who have consistently held the title since the rankings launched in 2009. These include Jupiter's Merlin managers Algy Smith-Maxwell, John Chatfeild-Roberts and Peter Lawery, as well as M&G's bond veteran Richard Woolnough.
Henderson Global Investors and Jupiter Asset Management were the best-represented firms, employing ten and nine FE Alpha Managers respectively. Fidelity Investments came a close third with eight awards.
FE head of research Rob Gleeson said: “The FE Alpha Manager Ratings assess performance throughout a manager’s entire career, across all the funds he or she has managed, and are designed to reward skill, consistency, alpha generation, and downside protection.
“Especially impressive are the 35 managers who have consistently achieved a rating for each of the past six years, excelling through different market conditions from the downturn of 2008 to last year’s bull market.”
FE judges fund managers according to their track records since 2000, with extra weighting for managers with the longest track records to highlight the benefits of experience. The rating is based on three components: risk-adjusted alpha; consistency of outperformance versus their benchmark; and outperformance in both up and down markets.
Managers awarded an Alpha Managers rating for the first time this year include:
• Guy Bowles, CEO and CIO of Ingenious Asset Management
• Anthony Smouha, CEO of Atlanticomnium
• Mario Gabelli, chairman of GAMCO Investors
• Henry Dixon, founder of Matterley
• Zak Summerscale, CIO of European high yield at Babson Capital
• Stephen Anness, manager of Invesco Perpetual Global Opportunities
• Michael Clements, manager of Franklin European Growth
• Edward Lam, manager of Somerset Emerging Markets Dividend Growth
