US pharma group AbbVie reconsiders $54bn Shire deal

US pharmaceutical firm AbbVie is reconsidering its proposed takeover of UK rival Shire following a US tax crackdown.

In a statement, the firm said its board of directors will meet next week to reconsider the $54bn takeover, proposed in July, which would have created one of the world's largest pharma groups.  AbbVie said: "AbbVie's board will consider, among other things, the impact of the US Department of Treasury's proposed unilateral changes to the tax regulations announced on 22 September, 2014, including the impact to the fundamental financial benefits of the transaction."
