The FTSE 100 has broken through its previous peak to set a new record high as it nears the 7,000 mark.
On Tuesday the index topped its record closing high of 6,930 points reached on December 1999 to close at 6,949.63. It opened slightly lower on Wednesday to trade around the 6,939 level. The blue chip index had earlier broken through its intraday record high of 6,950, which was also set in 1999. The FTSE 100 passed its 15-year high last week when it closed at 6,898. Academics at the London Business School have suggested the index has a 50/50 chance of hitting 10,000 by 2022.
