Barclays CEO sacked as board demands leadership change

Barclays chief executive Antony Jenkins is to leave the bank as the board of directors calls for a change in leadership with a "new set of skills".

Jenkins (pictured), who became group chief executive in 2012, will leave the business on 17 July, to be replaced by executive chairman John McFarlane while the group looks for a permanent replacement. McFarlane, previously chairman of Aviva, took over the role of executive chairman from Sir David Walker at the start of this year. The board of directors said a "new set of skills" is necessary to spur the recovery of the bank and "accelerate the pace of execution going forward".
