China to Soros: Don't short the renminbi

May face 'legal consequences'

Legendary investor George Soros has been warned against taking out short bets on China's renminbi by newspapers in the country, who said it would result in "severe legal consequences".

Soros (pictured) told Bloomberg last week he was shorting a number of Asian currencies but did not specifically mention the renminbi or the Hong Kong dollar. However, he has been blamed in the past for attacks against Asian currencies during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, according to the Financial Times.  This has led to a warning on the front page of an English version of the People's Daily headlined "Declaring war on China's currency?
