'Genuinely active' managers outperform trackers in EMs - study

A study has found active emerging market managers consistently outperform their benchmark, despite the failure of active managers in other regions to match the returns of passives.

The research, produced by Steven Holden, founder of Copley Fund Research, shows active fund managers running global emerging market funds have outperformed their passive alternative over both five and ten years, the Financial Times reports. The research firm analyses some 124 funds, with total assets under management of $248bn (£188bn). Holden admitted even he found the outcome of the study "surprising", given the general view that active managers struggle to outperform the index.
