LGIM plans to bring smart-beta strategies to retail space

Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) is eyeing the possibility of expanding its smart-beta offering, which is currently only available to institutions, into the retail space.

The firm is one of the UK's largest providers of index funds, managing over £274bn in trackers. It was also the third-largest manager by net retail sales during 2016 with inflows of £1.4bn, according to the most recent Pridham Report.  LGIM has offered smart-beta strategies to institutional investors since 2006; these products are designed to add value by strategically choosing and weighting the companies built into an index based upon factors such as volatility, momentum and size.  However, its key offering to retail clients currently consists of index trackers and the multi-index ra...
