FCA investigates Barclays CEO in whistleblowing case

Could violate UK and US laws

Barclays group chief executive James Staley is under investigation by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for allegedly trying to identify a whistleblower within the company.

Staley (pictured) is being investigated for trying to identify a whistleblower, who had alerted the firm via written letter to a matter involving a senior executive.  This was sent in June 2016 and Staley requested the author was identified as he felt it was an unfair personal attack on a senior employee.  He was told this was inappropriate but, in July 2016, mistakenly believed he had clearance to identify the author and so the firm's Group Information Security team worked with a US law enforcement agency to do so.
