'Right-wing shift' in Europe as Kurz elected Austrian Chancellor

The rise of populist parties has returned to the agenda in Europe, with Austria electing 31-year-old Sebastian Kurz as the country's new Chancellor.

Kurz is leader of the People's Party and achieved 31% of the vote, according to preliminary results.  It is possible he could now form a coalition government with the right-wing Freedom Party, led by Heinz-Christian Strache, which achieved 27% of the vote.  In his victory speech, Kurz said: "Today is not the day of triumph over others, but today is our chance for real change in this country."
