Euro falls after Merkel's coalition talks collapse

The euro has fallen this morning after German Chancellor Angela Merkel failed to secure a coalition, meaning the country may need to hold fresh elections.

Merkel (pictured) was re-elected as Chancellor for a fourth time in September but has since failed to secure a coalition as the Free Democratic Party exited talks last night. Disagreements between parties have been on issues including immigration, taxes and climate policies. Merkel has defended her open border stance during Europe's refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016 but this deterred many voters, who switched from the CDU to anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany.
