Australian investment bank Macquarie Group has promoted the head of its asset management arm Shemara Wikramanayake to chief executive, the first female CEO at a major investment bank.
Wikramanayake, who has worked at Macquarie for 31 years, has transformed her division to see asset management generate over half of the firm's total net profit. She joined the firm in 1987 and initially worked in corporate advisory, setting up Macquarie Capital, before being promoted to head of asset management in 2008. Wikramanayake will be replacing Nicholas Moore, who retires after ten years in the CEO role, having restructured the business following the global financial crisis.
