What happens to performance after a 'star' fund manager leaves?

New research from online investment service provider Willis Owen has revealed 'star' managers really do make a difference as annualised outperformance is shown to have fallen significantly following their departure.

Analysis by Willis Owen looking at 15 investment funds that saw their 'star' manager leave between 2013 and 2017, found the level of outperformance dropped dramatically after they had left. On average, the funds in question saw annualised outperformance against relative benchmarks fall from 3.6% to 0.4% once new managers took over. This included Neil Woodford's former Invesco High Income and Invesco Income funds, which he passed responsiblity to Mark Barnett following his departure in March 2014.
