To float or not to float - that is the question.
Actually it is not the question because Gartmore has decided it is going to float, marking the latest episode in the colourful history of the company. It does raise the question as to whether or nor asset management companies are businesses suited to be in the public markets. Certainly, the experience has been a painful one for Liontrust over the past couple of years and arguably if New Star had been a private company then it would still be operating independently.
