What is the difference between an investment trust and a gamble? ITs were an issue confronted by the dragons on Dragons' Den two weeks ago.

You might have seen the programme. They had a proposition to fund a poker player. As it happens the player, JJ Hazan, is a neighbour of mine so I knew what was coming. JJ (real name Jeraint) is a good poker player. He is the only person around my way who has paid off his mortgage. He has a very nice house in Sweden off the back of his playing and funded six months travelling around the world. To put it into crude terms, since November 2006 he has made a profit of $586,000 from playing tournament poker. JJ’s pitch was simple – invest £65,000, which he will use as stake money to play...
