This is strange time of year for me. In July 2005, when most people in the UK were concerned with the threat of terrorism as a result of the bombings, I was in hospital.
In fact, I went in on 7/7 and did not come out until September with an illness that turned out to be almost life ending. I have paid tribute to the nurses and doctors who saved my life before in this column, and I will take every opportunity to thank them in the future. But what a life-changing experience like that does is make you realise not only how lucky you have been, but also how each of us as individuals have a responsibility to give something back.
