Gartmore - what's all the fuss about?

We love a drama in the fund management world, don't we? To sell or not to sell has been the start of virtually every conversation in the last week about Roger Guy - I even had a cameraman from the BBC asking me if he should get out of Gartmore funds.

Roger Guy’s not a star – he’s just a very good fund manager who has made his investors and himself some very decent money over the last decade or so. Good luck to him, and congratulations to his investors. But a ‘star’? A vacuous word which implies he appears on the pages of Hello! or Heat magazines after being snapped coming out of some exclusive West End club by the paparazzi. If he’s lucky, he has his picture in Investment Week every now and again. Not quite star material for me. My take – for what it’s worth – is simple.
