Was it Rhett Butler who told Scarlett O'Hara in the most torrid moments of Gone with the Wind that there is as much money to be made in the downfall of a nation, as in its ascendance?

The same kind of sentiment, clearly detested and derided in the book, seems to be hanging over the eurozone, even if there is no cannon fire and uniformed gents galloping to flag it. The eurozone is in trouble and immediately faces two problems (apart from the obvious one of having to find unimaginable amounts of dosh). The first is there is not yet acceptance there is a problem; the second is some people think it is not a problem, but an opportunity. It is true so much political capital was spent creating the euro and the European Union that it will not be ditched without a struggle....
