Recently I heard about the sales director of an asset management company who is being paid £250,000 basic and a guaranteed bonus of the same amount.

And then there are the growing number of headteachers now earning over £150,000 or closer to £200,000 if you include pension contributions. Is either situation fair? It is a strange word ‘fair’. In the current climate the taxpayer or a taxi driver would probably say earning £150,000 as a teacher is not fair – whatever that means. In reality it means ‘that is not fair because I am not earning it,’ and plays into the hands of those who think just because they pay tax they reserve the right to voice their opinion on absolutely everything.
