The Contrarian Investor: Should we ignore the voices of doom?

Over the last few weeks my ‘voice of doom' spectrometer has started peaking again.

Sentiment analysis is a fascinating and arcane world, and adherents to this dark art of behavioural economics have lots of new tools available to help them spot subtle notches up and down in the level of fear. Google Trends, with its analysis of news and other headlines, is a constant source of amusement with my own favourite search terms ‘the end’ (trending down you will be glad to know), ‘financial crisis’ (still at higher than normal levels but down on 2008) and last but no means least ‘economic meltdown’ (trending sharply up in the last few weeks).
