When did tax and pensions become so popular with the electorate?

It used to be said politicians never talked about pensions reform in their manifestos because it was so boring it would never get them any votes. They never talked about tax, unless it was something to do with income tax, for much the same reasons. Now, all of a sudden, corporation tax, transfer pricing and pensions caps have become every constituency MP’s favourite subjects, replacing hunting, gay marriage and reforming the House of Lords, and only marginally more important than reforming the press.
