Eric Moore, manager of the FP Miton Income fund, takes a closer look at opportunities in the life assurance, mining and banking sectors.

Strong structural drivers such as the ageing population, the demise of employer sponsored defined benefit pension schemes and changes to the regulatory framework for financial advice all provide opportunities for long-term growth. Legal & General is well positioned here. The shares offer an attractive yield of 5.5% and should grow their dividends by 7% per annum. St James's Place has a lower starting yield of 2.7%, but should see dividend growth of 20% per annum for at least the next three years.
