This month, my longstanding colleague Andrew Laing retires. Andrew joined me at Aberdeen Asset Management in April 1986.

Originally a commercial lawyer, Andrew left the practice to specialise in unquoted investment in Edinburgh.  He then joined a fledgling Aberdeen AM to set up and run our private equity department. Later that year, we launched an investment trust investing in unquoted stocks. It soon became apparent that Andrew had an instinct for finding tomorrow's successful companies.
