Kier Starmer is in pole position to become the next leader of the Labour party, as MPs called for Jeremy Corbyn to resign immediately after a resounding defeat at Thursday’s general election.
Corbyn said he would not lead Labour into the next general election, having led the party to its worst showing at the polling station for almost a century. The current leader of the opposition said he would continue in his role during what he called "a period of reflection", until a leadership contest can be held.
